Grant to bring indigenous poetry to Rapid City public schools
RAPID CITY, S.D. — A recent grant awarded to the Rapid City Public Schools Foundation will be used for an indigenous poetry workshop in April.
RCPS Foundation works to provide grant funding for the schools in the district. Two weeks ago, they were awarded $3,900 for an indigenous poetry workshop and reading event in April for National Poetry Month.
“Writing is a great coping mechanism for all kinds of different things,” said Whitnee Pearce, Director of Diversity, Equity and Outreach for RCPS. “And then to be able to highlight indigenous poets from our community who are really doing the work and really showing their culture and things like that, it’s going to be important for our Native and non-Native students.”
The event is still in the early stages of planning, but the hope is for workshops and readings from different indigenous poets to be presented for K-12 students in the district.
