Governor Proclaims Suicide Prevention Week in South Dakota

 Governor Dennis Daugaard is proclaiming September 7th-13th as suicide prevention week in South Dakota. South Dakota ranks 14th in the nation in its rate of suicide deaths. Suicide is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States with one suicide occurring on average every 12.8 minutes.

     Suicide occurs across all age, economic, social and ethnic boundaries, and is now the tenth leading cause of all deaths in the United States and the ninth leading cause of all deaths in the state of South Dakota.

     Suicide specialist, Stephanie Schweitzer Dixon, community services director of the front porch coalition is helping bring awareness to our area, she’s teaching classes this week and invites the community to participate in world suicide prevention day, September 10th by putting a candle in your window for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
