Gourd galore at 10th Annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes took over Main Street Square to usher in October.

An entire cornucopia of pumpkin-themed activities gave everyone something to do during the 10th Annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival on Saturday.

Visitors browsed the farmers’ market and vendor booths, looking for potential jack-o-lanterns to carve and pumpkin-infused treats to eat.

Many kids activities were on-hand: children enjoyed fun trips on the pumpkin train, painting pumpkins and launching miniature and life-sized gourds on catapults of respective size.

Despite a bit of wind chill, organizers said that the weather matched the occasion.

“The weather is perfect. We were really hoping, with the rainy weather we had this week, that it would clear up just for this day,” said Elizabeth Smith, MSS events director. “It was a little bit brisk, so Fall was in the air, but it was perfect for this Fall harvest celebration.”

Pumpkin festival-goers said that the event brought out the community to revel in the changing of the season.

Annie Daniel attended the festival with her family and said that the best part of the event was being with her neighbors.

“I love it. It’s a lot of really good people. It feels like a very safe environment,” Daniel said. “It’s a lot of fun, a lot of attractions, a lot of merchandise – it’s pretty neat.”
