Give thanks and learn about your family’s health history

PIERRE, S.D. – It’s not just Thanksgiving, it’s also National Family Health History Day.

The South Dakota Department of Health says family gatherings, either in person or on Zoom, are a great time to learn more about your family’s health history.

Talk to your parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles to learn about any major medical conditions in the family.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most people have a family health history of at least on chronic disease, like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Learning more about your family’s health is also informative to your doctor in deciding certain screenings and when.

It can also help you learn more about lifestyle changes you can make to prevent some of those chronic diseases.

Happy Thanksgiving! Did you know that #Thanksgiving is also National #FamilyHealthHistory Day? Take some time to find out your family’s health history. http://ow.ly/5kyq50C7y5H
