Genetic genealogy helps solve 2012 Butte County sexual assault case

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — Thirty-four-year-old Shane Boice pleaded guilty to second-degree rape as part of a plea deal regarding a 2012 Butte County sexual assault. Two burglary counts were dropped as part of the agreement. Boice’s 45 year sentence began February 17 with one days credit for time served.

The Rapid City Journal reports that police tested DNA obtained from the crime scene at the time of the assault, but could find no match within available DNA databases.

The police department and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation continued the investigation, and in 2018, sent the DNA sample to Parabon Nanolabs, a genetic genealogy company, which eventually led them to Boice.
