Further information surfaces about final days of missing Wyoming teen
MOORCROFT, WY — The Moorcroft Police Department (MPD) has revealed some key details about the final days of Shayna Ritthaler, the Wyoming teenager who went missing and was found dead Monday in a home outside of Sturgis.
Thursday, Oct. 03, 2019 — 1:50 PM- MPD was contacted by the Moorcroft High School in reference to a 16-year-old female student (Shayna Ritthaler) who had not returned from her open lunch period. Fellow students of Moorcroft High School reported to school administration that Shayna was last seen walking toward a local coffee shop.
12:36 PM – Surveillance video confirmed that Shayna was observed standing at the crosswalk of Country Lane and East Converse Street, and appeared to be texting. Shortly after a grey two-door Jeep Cherokee was seen entering into the southwest portion of the Coffee Cup parking lot from I-90. Shayna was seen walking toward the vehicle and entering into the passenger side. The Jeep left the Coffee Cup parking lot appearing to head southbound on Highway 16.
2:50 PM – MPD officers spoke to school administration officials and were provided with Shayna’s guardian information and her description. Shayna’s guardians were contacted and an attempt to locate (ATL) to surrounding areas for the Jeep and Shayna.
4:22 PM- Shayna was entered as a Runaway into NCIC.
Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 – Shayna’s cellular phone indicated her last location had been in Moorcroft the previous day at approximately 12:36 PM and the phone had since been deactivated. Shayna’s social media accounts had also been inactive since the previous day and no updates had been provided to family or friends.
Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 – MPD found additional information in regard to the unidentified person of interest who is suspected of driving the Jeep and had reason to believe this person was in the Lead/Deadwood area. Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a request for assistance to locate Shayna and the unknown subject and vehicle.
Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019 – Deadwood Police Department was able to locate the vehicle in the Sturgis area and a male subject had been contacted in Deadwood, but Shayna was not present.
Monday, Oct. 7, 2019 – Meade County Sheriff’s Office contacted MPD that a deceased female subject they believed to be Shayna had been found.
Meade County Sheriff’s Office reported that a search warrant was executed Monday at a home in Blucksberg, an unincorporated community south of Sturgis. A body believed to be Shayna Ritthaler, 16, was found in a basement bedroom. Officials say an autopsy is scheduled later this week.
Michael Campbell, age 17, was arrested in connection with the case shortly thereafter. Campbell is being prosecuted as an adult and was charged with second-degree murder for the death of Shayna Ritthaler.
