Freed’s name lives on in new location after 2017 fire

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A devastating fire in the summer of 2017 tore through the Freed’s Fine Furnishings and Furniture Mart in Rapid City. On Wednesday, the owners were able to officially unveil the new location, 5th and Main Furniture by Freed’s.

“Freed’s Fine Furnishings has always been our parent company and once we decided we couldn’t go back to our location on Sturgis Road, we had the furniture mart here we needed to retain the Freed’s name. So this store is a hybrid of our furniture mart and Freed’s Fine Furnishings, so we felt a new name was necessary to reflect that,” said co-owner, Erin Krueger.

The Freed’s name has been around for quite some time. Ninety-seven years to be exact. Over the years, the store expanded to different locations through the Black Hills and neighboring states. The fire helped inspire expansion in new ways.

“It allowed us to do some things that were necessary,” said Krueger. “We got to do a lot of updates, a lot of refreshes and hopefully get us set for the next 97 years. This is our 97th year of business so we hope to be around for another hundred.”

Krueger says they still need to remodel downstairs but after tackling this renovation, they’re going to take a break for a while.
