RAPID CITY, S.D. — September is Sexual Awareness month, which has inspired Volunteers of America Northern Rockies (VOA), the Community Health Center of the Black Hills and Monument Health, to partner up and conduct a free STD testing event.

The testing will be open to the public at the One Heart Community Health Center Clinic, located at 217 Kansas City Street, on Wednesday, September 29 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“STD infections are on the rise in our community so holding a free STD testing event will increase access to care to individuals who otherwise may not be able to afford testing and treatment,” says Jessica Buckley, BSN RN, HIV Health Services Nurse Manager for VOA. “If we can identify and treat sexually transmitted infections, then we can prevent the transmission to others.”

The VOA states that it is very important to know one’s STD status in order to manage existing conditions and to avoid transmission. Advances in medicine have made STDs more manageable than ever, and knowledge of your status can lead to a healthier, happier life, and the protection of your partners.
