Free pet tag week for Spearfish residents

SPEARFISH, S.D. — Spearfish has a city ordinance that requires all pets to have a tag, and to help encourage owners to get their pets registered, this week is free pet tag week.

Through Friday, all pet owners have to do is head to the Spearfish Police Department to register their pet and pick up a tag.

Pet tags are usually five dollars for pets that are spayed or neutered, and $10 for those that are not. Owners will need to provide the pets name, breed, and a description of the animal, as well their rabies shot information.

Indoor pets are also required to have a tag and should have it on in case they get loose.

Chief Curt Jacobs of the Spearfish Police Department says, “It’s been extremely helpful to us, and I will say this free pet week is very well accepted. A lot of people come in this week to get their tags. A lot of times we’re able to contact the owner and get that animal returned without ever having to place it in impound.”

The pet tags are good for the full calendar year and are set to expire December 31st.
