Founding Father cemetery tour and museum display

RAPID CITY, S.D. –  The Minnilusa Historical Association partnered with the Journey Museum to celebrate a Rapid City Founding Father, John Brennan.

The day started with a visit to Mountain View Cemetery to tour the Brennan family gravesite. The tour was lead by re-enactor Wayne Gilbert, who played Brennan.

From there people went to the Journey to learn more about his life and legacy.

Brennan was one of Rapid City’s first mayors in the late 1800s. He went on to be the president of the first-ever city council, a fire chief, a school superintendent and took on several other roles in the community. Along with that, he built Rapid City’s first hotel.

“He was with a group of miners that didn’t have much luck mining, so they came out of Palmer Gulch and created a business town,” said Minnilusa’s executive director, Mark Slocum.

The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting and opening of a new display in memory of his Brennan’s granddaughter.
