Forest Service honors fallen firefighter from Rapid City

Black Hills Engine Captain David Ruhl, who died while battling a California wildfire, was transported to Mt. Shasta on Monday.

Ruhl was accompanied by engines from the Modoc National Forest and by other fire departments during portions of the journey.

The U.S. Forest Service says an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death. The service says this is another step in the investigation to determine how the fatality occurred and what lessons can be learned. Other firefighters say they’re trying to cope and continue doing their jobs.

U.S. and Forest Service flags on forest land have been ordered to fly at half-staff in Ruhl’s honor until August 6.
