Five hospitalized, one arrested for DUI after car hits tanker truck

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Five people were hospitalized and one person was arrested after an SUV collided with a three-axle tanker truck near the intersection of Nameless Cave Road and Highway 44.

According to Captain Scott Sitzes of the Rapid City Police Department, around 10:30 a.m. Friday, the driver of the Nissan SUV missed their turn, attempted to make a U-turn, and in doing so failed to yield to tanker.

Non-life threatening injuries were sustained by both parties, with five individuals going to the hospital for major and minor injuries. No leaks were detected from the fuel truck.

According to the RCPD, the driver of the SUV appears to be at fault. Alcohol was determined to be a factor in the accident, and the driver was arrested for Driving Under the Influence.

Traffic delays on Highway 44 were opened back up after the scene was cleared.
