Firefighters battling 74-acre wildland fire near Elk Creek

UPDATE: According to the Pennington County Fire Service, the fire has been contained.


RAPID CITY, S.D. — At about 2:52 p.m., several fire department agencies were paged to a 10-acre grassfire that was growing rapidly near Elk Creek Rd and Ketelson Loop.

Eventually, the fire grew to 74 total acres before being knocked down. Wildland fire crews will remain on scene throughout the night until no longer needed in order fight any flare ups.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by Great Plains Fire.

The list of responding units included:

Ellsworth AFB, New Underwood VFD, Rapid City FD, Rapid Valley VFD, Black Hawk VFD, Hereford VFD, Battle Creek VFD, Sturgis VFD, Box Elder VFD, Doty VFD, Great Plaines Fire, Whispering Pines VFD, Hermosa VFD, Meade County Sheriff, and Meade County Emergency Management.
