Fire breaks out in vault of old Black Hills Federal Credit Union building

RAPID CITY, SD — Emergency crews were on scene Monday morning when a fire broke out at the old Black Hills Federal Credit Union building at 225 Main Street in downtown Rapid City.

The former financial institution is in the midst of being converted into a pastoral center by the Rapid City Catholic Diocese.

According to RCFD officials, at 8:46 a.m. the construction crew was cutting inside the vault when it caught fire. RCFD units were dispatched and Truck 1 was utilized to fight the fire.

At 9:19 a.m., forward progress of the fire was reported as stopped.

The fire was confined to the old bank vault area. Truck 1 was able to extinguish the fire with 5 gallons of water due to a closed door.

No injuries are reported at this time.
