Finding Rapid City shelter dogs a home for Christmas

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Humane Society of the Black Hills is making sure man’s best friends aren’t alone for the holidays this year.

On Monday, they announced the launch of their first-ever Holiday Dogs program. Ten lucky families who meet the criteria will get the chance to take a dog home from Dec. 23 to 26.

According to Jerry Steinley, the community resource cirector with the Humane Society of the Black Hills, the program puts the dogs in a new setting to help socialize them.

“I think it’s special for the dogs because any time they get out and get a new experience, it’s good, it’s healthy,” Steinley said. “They get a walk, they get to meet different people, be in a different environment, so that’s why it’s healthy for the dogs.”

The families will have to return the dogs after, but the hope is that they’ll adopt them afterward.

The humane society houses around 2,000 dogs throughout the year.
