Rapid City man moves closer to trial
KEYSTONE, S.D. – The latest on a fatal shooting in Keystone, S.D.
On Friday, a Rapid City man accused of shooting and killing Ty Scott, 19, in June was in court for his motions hearing.
Maxton Pfeiffer, 18, is being charged with first-degree manslaughter and could face a life sentence.
At this time, Pfeiffer has pleaded not guilty. Dana Hanna, who represents Pfeiffer, says as of now, they do not plan on providing an alibi or pleading mentally ill.
7th Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Connolly granted motions toward a status hearing Friday. The hearing will be held on Dec. 7, and a trial date will follow shortly after.
The man accused in the shooting death of a 19-year-old in Keystone, pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning.
Maxton Pfeiffer, 18, appeared in court to formally hear the charges he faces and to enter a plea.
Pfeiffer is charged with first-degree manslaughter. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.
The defense has said previously that the shooting on June 13 was accidental.
Pfeiffer is out of jail on a $10,000 bond.
A status hearing has been set for Sept. 7 and a trial could commence in 2019.

Police say Ty Scott, 19, was shot once Wednesday night and was dead when they arrived at the home on First Street.
The defense attorney for suspect Maxton Pfeiffer, 18, claims the shooting was accidental. He says Pfeiffer and Scott were with a group of people when Pfeiffer picked up a handgun and pointed it at the group. The attorney says the gun went off, hitting Scott.
If convicted, Pfeiffer would face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The victim and suspect in the shooting death have been identified.

Authorities have arrested Rapid City resident Maxton Pfeiffer, 18, as a suspect. Pfeiffer is charged with first-degree manslaughter.
The investigation is being handled by the Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting in Keystone.
At about 8:15 Wednesday night, deputies responded to the 400 block of First Street in Keystone for reports of a person with a gunshot wound. When they arrived, they found a deceased person in the home.
The sheriff’s office says this is an ongoing investigation but provided no additional details.
They do say there is no reason to believe there is a threat to public safety.
