Fatal crash on I-29

TORONTO, S.D. — One person died Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash west of Toronto in Deuel County.

The crash occurred on Interstate 29 just after noon. A northbound semi truck pulling a full trailer and a pup trailer braked suddenly to avoid two dogs running across the interstate. A 2013 Mazda Sport following behind the semi truck rear-ended the pup trailer.

The 60-year-old female driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene. The 49-year-old male driver of the semi was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

Both northbound lanes of I-29 were closed for a time after the crash.

Names of the two people involved are not being released at this time.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
