Fatal crash on E. North Street Thursday night

Fatal Car CrashRAPID CITY, S.D. — Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of E. Blvd N and E. North St. on Thursday evening.

In an update from Brendyn Medina, Community Relations Specialist for the Rapid City Police Department, a little after 10:00 p.m., police arrived at the accident and both vehicles in the head-on collision were in the southbound lane of E. North St. Several bystanders were attempting to pull the driver of a passenger car from the window of the vehicle. Shortly, after the driver was pulled free, the vehicle caught fire.

The driver of the passenger car was treated on scene and transported to the hospital, where the driver later died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver’s identity is being withheld until next-of-kin can be notified.

Witnesses reported that the passenger car was headed northbound on E. North St at a high rate of speed when it crossed the median and struck a southbound pickup. The driver and passenger of the pickup sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries.

There was no immediate evidence of alcohol or drugs being a factor in the collision.

The incident remains under investigation by the RCPD’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team (CART).
