Fatal Crash near Edgemont on Sunday
EDGEMONT, S. D. – In a press release on Monday, The Department of Public Safety reports a three vehicle crash that occurred three miles east of Edgemont.
A 57-year-old man died in the accident. The names of the six people who were involved have not yet been released.
A preliminary report suggests that the man who was killed was driving a 2011 Toyota Tundra and was eastbound on US Highway 18. The report indicates that he slowed down to make a left-hand turn onto Red Canyon Road, when he was rear-ended by a 19 year-old female driving a 2008 GMC Sierra pickup. The man’s vehicle was pushed into the oncoming westbound lane where it was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup carrying 4 passengers. The Toyota tipped over and the driver died at the scene.
Two of the passengers in the Chevrolet pickup were air transported to a hospital in Rapid City. Both sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. One of the other passengers was taken to a local hospital and the fourth passenger was not injured. All four passengers were wearing their seatbelts.
The 19 year-old female driving the GMC pickup sustained minor injuries and was also wearing a seatbelt.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
