Fatal crash in Hughes County results in one dead, two injured

PIERRE, S.D. — According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, one juvenile died and two adults were seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash Sunday night east of Pierre.

The names of the individuals involved have not been released at this time due to pending notification of family members.

A 2000 Nissan Maxima was heading northbound on West Bend Road when it left the roadway and went into the east ditch. Two of the three occupants were ejected from the vehicle. None of the occupants were wearing their seat belts.

One passenger, a 4-year-old, was pronounced dead at the Pierre hospital. The female driver and the second male passenger received serious non-life threatening injuries.

Charges are pending against the driver.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
