Fatal crash in Gregory County

BURKE, S.D. — A fatal crash three miles east of Burke left an individual dead and another injured in two-vehicle collision on Friday night.

Names of the people involved have not yet been released pending notification of family members. They were the only persons involved.

Around 7:20 p.m., a 1996 Chrysler Eagle Vision was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 18, when it went over the center line and collided head on with a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup that was heading westbound. The Dodge was also hauling a flatbed trailer.

The 16-year-old driver of the Chrysler was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The male 29-year-old driver of the pickup sustained life-threatening injuries and was transferred by ambulance to the Burke hospital. He was then airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
