Fallen utility pole causes considerable damage
RAPID CITY, S.D. — A power line was struck by a delivery truck causing the utility pole to break and fall down, damaging the surrounding area.
It happened around 10 in the morning on Monday at the Avantara North Skilled Nursing Facility on North Seventh Street. As the power lines fell they took down the top third of a utility pole and the transformers on it causing roof and other structural damage to the building. The gas lines stayed intact but water lines were broken.
Rapid City Fire Department, Black Hills Energy and Montana Dakota all responded and worked together to make sure safety measures were in place.
“We had the emergency generator shut down for a short time ‘til we could isolate the building… both gas and electricity.. to make sure there was no damage to the gas lines. The fire sprinkler system was broken as a result of the pole falling down,” said Lt. Jim Bussell, Rapid City Fire Department.
No patients inside the facility were injured and there were no oxygen supplies cut off.
