Facebook, Instagram and Twitter experiencing issues

MENLO PARK, CA — Throughout the day on Wednesday, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp have all experienced various issues that have impacted users worldwide.

The issues include problems with images and videos loading on Facebook and direct messaging on Twitter. Facebook says that it’s working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

The issues began at about 7 a.m. E.T. on Wednesday and have continued to persist throughout the day. Instagram and WhatsApp are both subsidiaries of Facebook.

Twitter says users have experienced issues with its direct messaging notifications and delivery.

“We’re working on a fix and will follow up as soon as we have an update for you. Apologies for the inconvenience,” the company tweeted on Wednesday.

Facebook experienced a record outage just a few months ago in mid March — during a severe winter storm that hit the Black Hills and much of the Plains, impeding public communication about the storm.

The outage lasted nearly 24 hours and was the longest in the company’s history. Facebook says it was due to a server configuration change. That outage also impacted its associated apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

Facebook says it’s still investigating the cause of Wednesday’s issues, though the company told CNN that it does not believe a cyber attack is to blame.

Millions of companies advertise through the social media platforms, meaning that widespread problems impact billions of individuals and businesses and can have serious economic repercussions.
