Extra cabs employed for New Year’s celebrations
RAPID CITY, S.D. – As the new year quickly approaches, Rapid City taxi services are bringing all hands on deck for the midnight festivities.
Taxi drivers will provide rides throughout New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s Day for people throughout the Black Hills.
The cab services expect to circulate more cars in downtown Rapid City to handle the influx of New Year’s celebrants.
According to Monic Cruz, manager and driver at Rapid Taxi, her dispatchers see a large increase in calls for transportation due to ball drops and home parties each year.
“We can get calls every one minute, two minutes … as soon as I hang up the phone, it rings,” Cruz said. “I‘ve had to stay until 10 o’clock in the morning, 11 o’clock – people are still getting home, getting their cars, but that just means everybody’s staying safe.”
Rapid City Police Department will also bring in more patrols during the 2019 festivities as part of their “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
The cab companies emphasize calling a taxi ahead of time or riding with a designated driver if one plans on celebrating the new year with some drinks.
“It’s the main goal: just to make sure people get home safe,” Cruz added. “We know how much D.U.I.’s can cost with the programs they’ve got going on and the fines. It’s just not worth it.”
Students attending certain South Dakota Board of Regents college can also nab a free cab ride through Rapid Taxi’s Safe Rides Home program. The passengers must provide a college-issued I.D. are limited to one destination per group.
