Expanded Meals on Wheels Program Serves Hill City Area Community
Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota currently provides a weekly delivery of one hot meal and multiple frozen meals to several Hill City residents; however, community leaders have recognized a need to expand services to reach more residents.
HILL CITY, S.D. — A concerned Hill City resident, Joann, also recognized the need during a community gathering and got the ball rolling to bring back the Meals on Wheels Program full force for Hill City residents.
Joann Hoffman, Hill City resident, says, “It’s huge, I mean it’s gonna save people money, it’s gonna make people communicate and come to the cafe and talk to each other, see each other, know more about what is going on with each other to be able to help each other.”
Now, the Hill City Cafe will partner with Meals on Wheels to provide a daily “Hearts for Hill City” plate to guests 60 and over, who will get a fresh cooked meal on a daily basis from 11-1:30, on a free-will donation with punch cards available. The service not only fills bellies but also fuels conversations.
Jodi Litz, Development Specialist Meals on Wheels Western SD, says, “The benefit of having the community dining experience with their friends and family we know is so huge to their well being and their mental health, their development, everything else that goes along with aging seniors.”
The Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce along with member businesses, individuals and organizations collaborated to offer this expanded service, demonstrating the small town, family feel.
Dale Householder with the Hill City Senior Center and Hill City Food Pantry says, “Hill City is a very connected community, we are actually a large family, and so we are getting a lot of retirees moving into Hill City. It’s a chance to get to know each other, to get to work together. I mean we have volunteers in this community that are just unbelievable, so this is another chance for volunteers to get together with people and just promote Hill City — it’s just a fabulous place to live.”
