Ellsworth Air Show performer dies in Michigan accident

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The driver of the Shockwave Jet Truck was killed following an explosion that occurred during a jet-fueled semitruck performance at the Field of Flight Air Show in Battle Creek, Michigan on Saturday.

The jet truck was going down a runway at Battle Creek Executive Airport when the explosion occurred. The driver, Chris Darnell, has performed at numerous air shows, including the Ellsworth Air and Space Show.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the Ellsworth Air and Space show said:

“Everyone involved with the recent Ellsworth Air and Space Show would like to express our sincere condolences to all the family and friends of Chris Darnell, the driver of Shockwave. His performance at the Ellsworth Air Show brought smiles and excitement to thousands.”

The Blue Angels Facebook page released a statement saying:

“We deeply mourn the loss of our friend, mentor, and fellow air show demonstration performer Chris Darnell, of the Shockwave Jet Truck. It has been an honor to perform alongside him for many years and our hearts are with his family, friends, team, and the air show community.”
