Ellsworth Air Force Base to hold fire pit training exercise

BOX ELDER, S.D. — You may see smoke coming from Ellsworth Air Force Base on Wednesday morning.

The 28th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department will be conducting a scheduled fire pit training at 10 a.m. Ellsworth firefighters periodically train in fire pits in an effort to ensure crews are prepared to respond to real world emergencies and aircraft fires.

Various units of the South Dakota National Guard will be joining the exercise in order to develop joint tactics and share best practices.

It will be conducted in an enclosed area without the use of foam. Local residents may see black smoke coming from the base.
