Early morning stabbing ruled as homicide after victim dies

RAPID CITY, S.D. — An early-morning stabbing is now being investigated as a homicide after the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Police Lights on an RCPD unit.Rapid City Police Department officers were dispatched in the early hours of October 19 to the area of 120 Surfwood Drive for a report of a stabbing that had just occurred.

When they arrived, police located the injured man laying on the ground. They located several stab wounds on the man when they examined him.

The injured man who later died from his injuries is identified as 24-year-old Leon Richards of Rapid City.

Since the time of the original call around 4:10 a.m., police have been working to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate the individual who is responsible. It is believed that Richards had an association with the suspect, and the incident doesn’t appear to be random in nature.

The RCPD is working with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the homicide.
