Early morning Meade County neighborhood fire destroys home, injures firefighter

MEADE COUNTY, S.D. — At 2:31 a.m. Sunday morning, firefighters were called to a rural Meade County neighborhood off North Haines for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters were called to 801 Virginia Ln., where a home in unincorporated Meade County and vehicles were destroyed in a multi-alarm fire that saw many displaced from the property. Minor damage was also done to a neighboring structure.

When crews first arrived, they found a fully engulfed structure fire that was threatening neighboring structures, a recreational vehicle and passenger vehicles. The structure where the fire began was reported to be a total loss.

Due to an increased call volume of the Fourth of July weekend, the fire escalated to three alarms.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries. No civilians were injured.

The residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
