Thankfully, snow is looking less likely this week and more of a cold rain. Details posted below

8:40 AM UPDATE: ROAD CONDITIONS

US-85 20 Miles North of Belle Foruche

US 212 Near Mud Butte

  • Snow is beginning to cover road surfaces North of Belle Fourche on US 85 and along highway 212 towards Mud Butte and Faith
  • Fog is beginning to lift in areas of the hills, but could return this afternoon and evening
  • Snow will continue this morning in areas North and Northeast of the Black Hills until the Lunch hour, when most precipitation will push East
  • Until then, use caution going out towards areas of Butte and Northern Meade County

  • It’s going to feel like a Monday as you walk out the door, fog and mixed precipitation will be likely across areas of the Black Hills with temperatures in the high 30’s and low 40’s.
  • Very little impacts expected from frozen precipitation, but don’t be surprised to see a few bursts of snow here and there throughout the morning, even in Rapid City
  • Be careful for spots of low visibility and fog, particularly in the normal trouble spots like Highway 16
  • As we get towards tonight, a drizzly foggy evening will await us with less widespread rainfall

  • A steady rainfall over the next couple days will begin to add up, but at least in a slow and manageable pace from a soil moisture standpoint
  • Areas north of the Black Hills could potentially see some slick roads, but that seems to be the only areas that could expect impacts from frozen precipitation

  • Here are some preliminary estimates for total rainfall through early Thursday morning
  • Close to an inch of rain is likely for a large portion of our area, if not more

  • Once we get past Thursday, conditions improve as the Jet stream finally begins to lift North
  • This will allow warmer, more stable air to move through our region, prompting temperatures into the mid 60’s by this weekend

  • Here is a short range forecast for areas of the Black Hills

  • Here is a quick look at the short range forecast for our neighbors in the Great Plains

Have a great week everyone, we are receiving some nourishing moisture over the next week and will make for excellent sleeping weather! Grab some hot coffee and grab a good book. Sunny, warmer days are just around the corner.
