DSS hosts virtual Guardian Tree for Christmas

COVID-19 precautions have prevented the Department of Social Services from hosting their traditional Guardian Tree so this year the holiday traditional is virtual.

Each year many of the children in state custody, whether in group care facilities, kinship care, or foster care are able to enjoy Christmas gifts thanks to donations from the community.

Participants can sign up for a specific item or child or gift card retailer and amount.

Andrea Hemeyer, DSS foster care licensing and adoption supervisor, says, “All of our kids get super excited about the guardian tree, from toddlers to teens…just to be able to know that somebody in the community cared about them and gave them something very special just lights them up. It’s a wonderful thing to see and they really appreciate that somebody in their own community is thinking about them during the holidays.”
