Drivers asked to be cautious with Omaha Street traffic change

RAPID CITY, S.D. —A traffic change scheduled for next week in Rapid City could shake up your morning routine.

Starting Monday, August 30, cars on Omaha Street east of Mountain View Road will be driving in the new westbound lanes and snake back eastbound between Mountain View and the Omaha Street Bridge.

Traffic moving along Mountain View Road will be using the northbound lanes leaving southbound closed for utility and surface work.

According to Department of Transportation Engineering Supervisor John Gerlach, construction in the area is set to finish in mid-December with more planned for next year.

“Next year, we have some center median work to finish along with some landscaping and some beautification,” said Gerlach. “And that work is scheduled to be completed by May next year, which is the overall completion for the project.”

With the upcoming traffic change, Gerlach recommends drivers be aware and alert on top of exercising a lot of patience.

“There’s going to be, like I said, a new traffic switch come Monday morning, so the traffic pattern is going to be a little bit different than what most people are expected to or have been going through the last couple of months,” Gerlach said. “So, come Monday morning, just make sure you’re wide-eyed and pay attention to the switch in traffic.”
