Douglas schools placed on lockdown after false alarm

BOX ELDER, SD –  Douglas Schools in Box Elder were placed on lockdown this morning due to reports of gunfire in the area. Schools were quickly cleared after the sound was determined to be a car backfire.

According to Superintendent Alan Kerr, the school resource officer received the initial report at 11:08 a.m. and had all schools in the district under lockdown within seconds.

After determining there were no gunshots, secure status was lifted by 11:30.

“We’re fortunate it wasn’t real but it’s good practice,” said Kerr
