Douglas School District masking protocol begins next week

BOX ELDER, S.D. — The Douglas School District is implementing a masking protocol next week in response to active COVID cases.

The small school district in Box Elder made the announcement Wednesday to make masks mandatory in response to active COVID cases reaching over 1.5 percent facility population with current cases at 1.62 percent.

Friday was the last optional, but encouraged, day for masks.

According to Superintendent Kevin Case, the community has been supportive of the district’s decision.

“I feel really good about the community support for where we’re going,” said Case. “We always hear some comments and thoughts and those are good things for us to hear, but overall I think the community wants what we want. We want our kids to be in school and we want to do that as safely as we can.”

Superintendent Case also believes the transition to masks will be seamless with many students and staff already taking the protocol.

The district asks that everyone provide their own mask and thanks the community for their flexibility as they continue to monitor active cases.
