Douglas School Board hosts emergency meeting in regard to staff pay

BOX ELDER, S.D. – Douglas School District held an emergency board meeting on Wednesday.

A quorum came together to decide whether or not classified district employees will be paid during this ongoing school closure.

COVID- 19 is forcing local school districts to close for nearly two months.

During this time some staff continue to work, which is why it was important to decide whether these employees would be paid.

The board unanimously voted to continue paying its classified staff through May 1, which is when they hope to reopen.

“That’s our lunchroom ladies, that’s our bus drivers, that’s our custodians. They’re still coming in, they’re still working. They’re doing it in shifts, they’re doing it as needed. If they’re here, they are getting paid hazard pay,” says, board president, Cathy Melendez.
