Donate Life 5K Walk/Run for Organ Donors

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Organ, tissue, and eye donations save and heal millions of people yearly.

Regional Health, Lifesource, and Dakota Lions Sight and Health work together to help patients and donors. This afternoon together they hosted a 5K run/walk to bring awareness to organ, eye, and tissue donation.

Not only did they encourage donor registration but they also celebrated those who have saved lives and those whose lives were changed by donation.

One couple at the 5K discussed how they lost their, 16-year-old son, Blaine, in an accident back in 2016. His organs saved four lives – including a young girl.

“One of the recipients of Blaine’s organs was a lung transplant. She was very young and she hadn’t been off oxygen very much in her life. She was pretty much restricted to her oxygen tanks and once she received Blaine’s lungs, she was off oxygen for the first time in maybe since she was a child  She is living on doing things she couldn’t do because of Blaine,” said his mother, Tabatha Calhoon.
