Devastating market fire kills at least 43 in Indian capital
NEW DELHI (AP) — Police say at least 43 people have died in a fire that broke out in a building in a crowded grains market in central New Delhi.
Doctors say another 16 people are being treated for burns or smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire early Sunday is being investigated. Fire Services chief Atul Garg says the blaze has been extinguished and the rescue operation completed. About 60 people were in the building at the time of the fire.
Firefighters fought the blaze from 100 yards away because it broke out in one of the area’s many alleyways, tangled in electrical wire and too narrow for vehicles to access.
