Department of Revenue reminds homeowners of property tax relief deadline

HomesPIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Revenue is reminding homeowners of the March 15 deadline to apply for property tax relief through the owner-occupied program.

Any South Dakota resident who owned and occupied a home on November 1, 2021 is eligible for for the program’s classification and property tax reduction. Additionally, taxpayers who have previously received the reduction and still own and occupy the same home will continue to receive the property tax reduction without applying.

Beginning March 1, 2022, the 2022 valuation notices will be sent to taxpayers that indicate if the property classification is owner-occupied, and homeowners are advised to make sure their property is classified as owner-occupied.

Anyone who has purchased or built a home prior to November 1, 2021 can apply for the classification through their local county director of Equalization by submitting the form through the Department of Revenue website, which can be found here.
