Denver Broncos trade with New Orleans Saints to acquire head coach Sean Payton
DENVER, CO – Denver Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said on Tuesday that the team has agreed to a trade with the New Orleans Saints to make Sean Payton the 19th head coach in the franchise’s history.
Payton signed an extension with the Saints in 2019 that was set to run through the 2024 season. The Saints and the Broncos had to negotiate compensation in order for Denver to sign Payton as their head coach.
The Saints will receive the Bronco’s 2023 first round pick and their 2024 second round pick.
In return, the Broncos will receive a third round pick in 2024. Payton has won nine playoff games, including a super bowl, in his 15 seasons in New Orleans.
Payton will be tasked with repairing Denver’s league lowest-scoring offense in 2022, which only averaged 16.9 points per game.
