Democratic caucus held at School of Mines

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Area leaders of the Democratic party organized their caucuses at the School of Mines this weekend.

Though the next legislative session is months away, leaders feel it is important to gather ideas for new policies and laws.

The meetings gave constituents the opportunity to discuss issues they would like brought to Pierre. Topics ranged from affordable housing, growing the state’s agriculture economy and increasing diversity in leadership. Democratic leaders also hope to make early childhood education a priority in the upcoming session.

Leaders say that a progressive view of the state’s issues to lawmakers can help the state grow.

Former state Democratic Chair Judy Olson Duhamel said, “Taking that information from the listening session and delivering it to the decision makers…is really important for all of the people in our state.”

The party held caucuses in Sioux Falls last week, addressing similar topics.
