RAPID CITY, S.D. — As a part of United Way of the Black Hills and Black Hills Reads ‘Healthy Readers’ initiative, the Delta Dental bus will be visiting the Rapid City Area School District.

In the interest of promoting healthy lifestyles in young children and helping them succeed in their educational journey, the bus will be parked at Robbinsdale Elementary from January 14th to the 15th. During this time, children from all over the district will be brought to Robbinsdale Elementary to receive free cleanings and procedures.

“Feeling healthy is a key part of a child’s success while in school,” says Black Hills Reads Director, Kayla Klein. “If a child is dealing with chronic tooth pain, they will not be able to give their full attention to the teacher or lessons while in class,”.

In order to receive care, these students may end up waiting in the Robbinsdale Elementary for long periods of time without much to do during their wait. This potentially can lead to anxiety about the care they are about to receive.

With this in mind, Black Hills Reads has offered to provide volunteers during the time while students wait, along with educational games and books for the volunteers to use while engaging with the children.

“This is why we are dedicating our funds for the bus and also helping organize volunteers to help ease the worries of the students that will be receiving this much needed care,” continued Klein.

Volunteers will be at the schools the following times:

  • January 14th: 8:20 – 4:00 pm
  • January 15th: 10:30 – 3:30pm

If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer for Black Hills Reads or if they have any additional questions about the partnership with Delta Dental, they can contact Kayla Klein at kayla@unitedwayblackhills.org or 605-343-5872.
