Deadwood VFD commemorates 20th anniversary of the Grizzly Gulch Fire

DEADWOOD, S.D. — The Deadwood Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a an open house and public forum at the Deadwood Fire Hall Wednesday, June 29, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Grizzly Gulch Fire.

Former Deadwood Mayor Francis Toscana will be speaking at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the fire and its impact on the Deadwood community.

The fire department will show the 2002 half-hour documentary “The Grizzly Gulch Fire: Battle in the Northern Hills” following Toscana.

The Grizzly Gulch Fire started June 29, 2002 on private land but it quickly spread toward Deadwood. The fire threatened the communities of Deadwood and Lead over the next 10 days, consuming over 11,000 acres of land and causing $5.5 million in damages.
