Deadwood preparing for the start of medical marijuana by putting guidelines and restrictions in place

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The City Commission heard the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit the ingestion of marijuana in public as well as on public transportation.

Barring a special legislative session in Pierre, medical marijuana will be legal on July 1.

Deadwood is trying to get the ordinance on the books by then.

There is one cigar bar that allows smoking inside, but it will not allow marijuana to be smoked since it does not sell marijuana.

Deadwood Mayor, David Ruth Jr., said, “They would not be eligible because state law requires that the only thing consumed on their property is what is actually on their property. There are some issues that we do need to address anticipating and preparing for the legalization of medical marijuana.”

The second reading of the ordinance will be on Monday, May 17 at the Deadwood City Commission meeting.
