Deadline approaching for Rapid City Council petitions of candidacy

RAPID CITY, S.D. — There are eight days left for anyone interested in the running for the Rapid City Common Council to file their paperwork before the deadline next Tuesday, March 29.

3 21 Rc Elections Sotvo00 00 42 12still001 The election is June 17 and seats are up for grabs in all five wards, all carrying three year terms. Candidate petitions must have 50 valid signatures and be turned into the city finance office by 5 p.m. on the 29th. The city recommends candidates get petitions in as early as possible, as one simple error could jeopardize their candidacy.

Rapid City Communications Coordinator, Darrell Shoemaker says, “Sometimes they’ll bring in 50 signatures and all it takes is one signature. Again, if the person isn’t registered to vote, if they aren’t living in the ward in which they claim to be, if there’s any particular issue and a signature gets tossed, then that person is not validated to run for office.”

March 29 is also the deadline for candidates to remove their name from the ballot.

If you need to register to vote, that deadline is May 23 which is when early voting for the common council begins.
