Days of ’76 Rodeo kicks off in Deadwood

DEADWOOD, S.D. — In Deadwood it’s time again for Days of ’76. In its 97th year, it’s the town’s longest-running annual event packed with 5 days of rodeo, parades and more.

Earlier this afternoon people from all over the country participated in the roping and pageant horses competitions. Tomorrow the rodeo kicks off and on Thursday they’ll have barrel racing.

“The people are great and it’s pretty competitive too. Everybody’s friends until you get into the area pretty much but nobody ever gets their feelings hurt really, everybody’s on everybody’s side,” said Garrett Hale, a competitor.

The parade starts at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and another will roll through town Saturday morning at 10.

Deadwood’s Days of 76 has received the PCRA’s rodeo of the year award 18 times and they upgraded to the large rodeo category last year.
