“Dances with Wolves” actor, former Rush captain meet with Rapid City community

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Saturday night, the Rapid City Rush are presenting “Dances with Wolves” night to celebrate Native American Heritage Month.

Starring in the movie is actor Graham Greene appearing alongside Kevin Costner. Ahead of the Rush Game, Greene along with former Rapid City Rush Captain Winston Day Chief hosted a meet and greet at Prairie Edge on Friday night.

Greene reflected on the filming of Dances with Wolves, saying he had no idea it would become the popular movie it is today.

“Turned out we had to put a lot of work in, an incredible amount of work,” said Greene. “Work and sacrifice from all of the cast and crew, everybody who worked on it. It showed the Lakota people as family people, with a sense of humor, a good family life and a lot of others, and that stuck.”

The film won Best Picture at the 1990 Academy Awards.

Greene and Day Chief will both be at the Rush game Saturday night. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Specialty jerseys will be auctioned off after the game. A portion of the proceeds will go to Re-Member, a non-profit organization that works to provide opportunities and improve the quality of life for members of the Oglala Lakota Nation.
