Custer State Park streams virtual field trip for kids

CUSTER STATE PARK, S.D. — With all of the cancellations and setbacks caused by the coronavirus, Custer State Park is helping people experience the Black Hills in this difficult time.

Park officials streamed a virtual field trip live on Facebook to give the kids in the Black Hills area a lesson on the bison herds in the state park.

“Even though you know our visitors center is closed and our park office is closed the park itself is still open,” said Kobee Stalder, the Visitor Services Program Manager for Custer State Park. “So our trails are still open, the wildlife loop road, so people can still take drives and see the wildlife. So there are ways they can still come outdoors and enjoy the park as long as they are, you know, following the social distancing rules that Gov. Noem and the CDC has put in place.”

The virtual field trip has been viewed over 20, 000 times, so the park plans to do more activities like it in the future.
