Custer School District closes schools Thursday after COVID-19 exposure

CUSTER, S.D. — In a Facebook post, the Custer School District announced Wednesday afternoon that the Custer Jr/Sr High School/ACE and Custer Elementary School will not be having any classes Thursday, October 15.

The decision comes after six new COVID-19 cases this week, and over 35 students out as close contacts.

The School Board met at noon Wednesday and decided to close the schools to students in Custer only, but Hermosa will have classes as normal.

South Dakota High School Activities Association sanctioned events will still take place as scheduled in cross country, volleyball, football, cheer, and dance. There will be no middle school activities in Custer.

The Custer School Board will meet this weekend and decide if a change of categories is needed like moving to Level 2 where masks must be worn by all. They will also decide if they go with an alternative schedule for the Jr/Sr High School or continue as they have been.

Custer Elementary and the Jr/Sr High School will let parents and students know how to pick up breakfasts and lunches for this weekend.
