Custer hosts Burning Beetle 2020
CUSTER, S.D. — Burning Beetle 2020 was held on Pageant Hill in Custer on Saturday.
The day was filled with a variety of beetle themed events for all ages. But the star of the night was of course, the burning beetle.
People began to gather around 4:50 p.m., gathering around and lighting their torches then making their way towards the giant beetle. At around 5:15 p.m. the crowd started chanting “Burn beetle, burn!” and torched the beetle.
The burning beetle was originally a way to bring awareness to bark beetles, which at one time were a threat to our forests. But now it has become a form of art and forest health awareness.
Along with the burn there was also a talent show, fireworks and a pub crawl.
