Custer County man found dead after house fire

CUSTER, S.D. – A 58-year-old man was found dead after his house went up in flames in Custer County.

Late Monday night, law enforcement was called to a mobile home fire 3 miles west of Custer. Sheriff Marty Mechaley and Lt. Jeff McGraw arrived within five minutes, but the home was already engulfed in flames.

The body of the property owner, Richard A. Roberts, was found inside.

Fire departments from Custer, Pringle and Argyle extinguished the fire before it spread to nearby homes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences on their Facebook page:

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Roberts family.”
